Jānis Čakste was the first president of Latvia and one of the most notorious politicians in Latvia history. He is buried in Meža kapi cemetery in Riga, where also such mini memorial has been built in 1935 (restored in 2008) - in Kārlis Ulmanis' presidency time (despite of the fact that Ulmanis and Čakste were political opponents, Čakste being the defender of democracy while Ulmanis was an authoritarian president). Jānis Čakste is enlisted between 100 greatest democrats in the world history, he got his plate and crystal in Hall of Freedom, Jungfraujoch, Switzerland. [full_width]
