The source of heat in winter: Riga TEC-1
Winter in Riga continues - no signs of spring so far. Central heating provides the necessary warmth in dwellings at this time of year, and one of the main thermal energy producers in Riga city is themro-electric central 1 (TEC-1) which chimneys and their smoke you see in these photos (old chimneys inactive, only the newly built part of central works). I wonder, is there such a thing as central heating in Southern European countries, like, f.e., Spain, Italy, Greece? I guess, temperatures are so high there, that even in winter there is no need for heating in homes, or am I wrong? See also Riga TEC-2.

Šodien dažās Spānijas provincēs sniga sniegs, tā kā apkure ziemā ir vajadzīga arī Dienvideiropā :)
ReplyDeleteAmazing shot. It would scare me living near to them though :)
ReplyDeleteHeating is necessary in huge areas in Spain. Where I come from it is usual to be below zero lots of days during the year, and apkure systems are the norm (natural gas). Just CAN'T do without them. In the south of Spain, though, most houses don't have heating (except small heaters or the air conditioning)
