New bicycle road
Right next to new Daugava promenade, alongside Krasta 3+3 lane magistral street, there is built a bicycle road, currently until Salu bridge but in the future it will connect this place with Riga's southern district Ķengarags. This is to my mind a perfect example of how to build transport infrastructure - separate place for cars, separate place for bicycles and separate place for walkers. I'm not fond of young urbanists ideas that bicycles and cars should be mixed together ("separating" them only with line on the street), not separated physically - of course, not in every place it's possible, but wherever it's possible it has to be built this way. Now they should connect this bicycle road and promenade properly with centre - although there is a nice underground pathway to Spīķeri quarter, but Spīķeri itself is separated from city's centre, it's rather hard to get there. Too bad, that it is made from concrete blocks, and it's unfriendly for road bikes...
ReplyDeleteP.S. Now cars and bicycles are mixed together. If they add an bicycle lane, then it would be safer. Like in London...
To me it felt very friendly for driving, a very smooth drive on it - smoother than some asphalt which sometimes feels like glueing on tyres, especially in hot temperatures!
ReplyDeleteAs to bicycle lanes - of course, they would be better than nothing! But this is just ideal solution - every type of transport has it's own carriageway!
