Academic Center for Natural sciences of University of Latvia (Jelgavas street 1). This was the first building (finished in 2015) in one of the most promising new development areas in Riga - Tornakalns area where the modern "student city" of Latvian university is developing. The building is nicknamed "House of Nature" as it houses several faculties related to natural sciences - biology, chemistry, geography and earth sciences. It was acknowledged as the best new building in Riga in 2015 as well as the second best public building in Latvia in 2015. For me it's hard to formulate attitude towards it - there are things that I like about it and things that I don't like at all. The building looks good in the perspectives where the heightened roof construction is visible but from the opposite side it looks rather like a bland, brutal box. The grey concrete together with thorny metal stripes creates a very depressive outlook. As far as I know it was planned to let grow these metal stripes with evergreen creepers - then, of course, it should look much much better. But several years has passed and the evergreens still are seen only at the basement level of building. Speaking about inside - there are some really nice things like designed co-working rooms for students, interesting artworks, cosy kitchenette and inner courtyard/atrium (but it is closed usually). But - I have never understood the trendy (? - is it really still trendy also elsewhere?) use of exposed concrete - not even in the exterior, but less much in the INTERIOR. Are there really someone who thinks that exposed concrete is an appropriate, good-looking and cosy material for INTERIORS?? Too bad that sometimes whole society has to suffer from architect's "diseases" and the need to uncritically follow the trends some weirdo somewhere have invented. Exposed concrete is the same unhumanistic mistake in architecture as those mistakes of 60ies modernism. Why aren't we capable to learn from the past?

Latvijas universitātes Dabaszinātņu centrs (Jelgavas iela 1). 2015. gadā uzceltā "Dabas māja" ir pirmā ēka vienā no daudzsološākajām jaunajām attīstības teritorijām Rīgā - Torņakalnā, bijušo mazdārziņu teritorijā pie Jelgavas ielas, kur attīstās Latvijas universitātes modernā "studentu pilsētiņa". "Dabas mājas" nosaukumu ēka nes, jo tajā nometinātas vairākas LU dabaszinātņu fakultātes - bioloģijas, ķīmijas un ģeogrāfijas/zemes zinātņu. Tā tika atzīta par labāko jauno ēku Rīgā, kā arī par otru labāko sabiedrisko ēku Latvijā 2015. gadā. Man joprojām ir grūti noformulēt viennozīmīgu attieksmi pret to - ir lietas, kas man šajā celtnē patīk, un ir tādas, kas nepavisam nepatīk. Ēka izskatās labi no tiem rakursiem, kuros redzama tās paaugstinātā jumta konstrukcija, taču no pretējā stūra tā atgādina prastu, brutālu kasti. Pelēcīgais betons kopā ar dzelkšņainajām metāla loksnēm uzdzen makten depresīvu noskaņu - šķiet, ka tas tā dizainēts, lai ierakstītos kopainā ar baisajiem, sarūsējušajiem padomjlaika laternu stabiem ēkas priekšā ielas pusē :). Cik zināms, bija plānots, ka metāla loksnes tiks apaudzētas ar mūžzaļajiem vīteņaugiem - tad tas, protams, izskatītos daudz daudz labāk. Taču nu jau pagājuši vairāki gadi, taču vīteņaugi aizvien redzami tikai ēkas pagrabstāva līmenī... Runājot par iekštelpām - tajās ir vairākas ļoti labas lietas, kā, piemēram, gaumīgas studentu kopdarba telpas, omulīga "virtuvīte" un iekšpagalms/ātrijs (kurš gan nez kāpēc ikdienā parasti ir slēgts!). Taču es nekad neesmu sapratis modīgo (?) eksponētā betona, kā arī atklāto inženierelementu (ventilācijas caurules, utt.) lietošanu vidē, kur jāstrādā cilvēkiem - pat ne eksterjerā, un kur nu vēl iekštelpās. Vai tiešām kāds domā, ka atklātais betons (un eksponētie inženierelementi) ir piemēroti, vizuāli pievilcīgi un visādi citādi omulīgi un labu noskaņu radoši materiāli INTERJERIEM?? Žēl, ka no arhitektu slimībām un vēlmei nekritiski sekot kāda dīvaiņa kaut kur izdomātiem trendiem reizēm ir jācieš visai sabiedrībai. Eksponētais betons un inženierkomunikācijas ir tāda pati antihumāna kļūda, kādas sešdesmitajos pieļāva modernisma arhitekti. Kāpēc mēs neesam spējīgi mācīties no pagātnes?
