Swedbank office tower (Balasta dam 1) | Swedbank biroju ēka (Balasta dambis 1)

Swedbank office tower. Swedbank tower is one of Riga's most recognizable modern landmarks. This office highrise stands at the riverfront right in the opposite side of Riga's Old Town. It was built in 2004 in a very short time - just a year and a half. The building is nicknamed "The stone of sun" - after the initial project which proposed different, lower building.

Swedbank tower, to my mind, embodies a really great contemporary architecture. I would rate it at least as good (if not better) looking than London's Gherkin, Malmo's Turning Torso and even Barcelona's Agbar skyscrapers. It comes with an amazing variety of perspectives - Swedbank tower silhouette changes with almost every step you take, when approaching or going around it. The look is so dynamic that by comparing it from some of the angles you can even hardly notice that it's the same building (unlike aforementioned famous European skyscrapers which looks the same from any point of view) - it can be a bit corpulent uncle from one side and a slim sportsman from the other. And it reflects light in it's glass and steel constructions so beautifully that it earns the title "Stone of Sun" even if it was originally meant for a different design.

Swedbank tower with it's 120 metres height at the time of completion was the second highest building in Riga (after St. Peter's church) but later one of Z-Towers has surpassed it for just a few tens of centimeters. One thing is shameful though - when Swedbank tower was built, it was promised to keep it's highest panorama floor publicly available. It was for a few years - but not anymore. Now Swedbank says that the "excursions" to the highest floor isn't available anymore, it's promises to the city is forgotten...
