Construction works of "Rail Baltica" integration in the centre of Riga will begin
At the end of January, construction work will begin in an ambitious project for the integration of the railway infrastructure of European importance "Rail Baltica" into the infrastructure of the center of Riga.
In order to ensure safe and comfortable traffic around the Central Station, three intersections will be rebuilt by the end of the year and a modern infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport will be built.
The goal of the project "Integration of the railway infrastructure of European importance "Rail Baltica" into the infrastructure of the city center of Riga" is to ensure safe and convenient movement for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport in the area adjacent to the Central Station, promoting the development of the station's multimodal public transport hub as a Baltic-wide mobility facility.
"The construction of "Rail Baltica" gives Riga the opportunity to make comfortable and modern territories for people, which have long been demanding to be organized. In a large area around the Central Station - up to the bus station and the Daugava embankment, including the public space around the Central Market up to Pushkin Street - this year, reconstruction will be carried out, which will transform this part of the city almost completely. From a part of Riga that is isolated in a sense, it will become an environment fully integrated into the city's bloodstream. This is a case where it is not some distant vision, but an imminent reality – construction works will begin in the next few weeks, and are planned to be completed by the end of the year. Like all construction works, these will also cause temporary inconveniences, but I hope that the builder will skillfully organize all kinds of traffic during the repair works, preventing as much inconvenience as possible to residents of Riga and guests of the city. This is a very important investment in Riga, both from the point of view of the city's image and financially, because almost 30 million euros are being invested, the absolute largest part of which is money from European funds," emphasizes Vilnis Ķirsis, Deputy Chairman of the Riga City Council.
The construction zone covers the entire waterfront of General Radzins from 13 January to Jēzusbaznīcas Street, as well as the areas adjacent to Riga Bus Station and Central Market. In this area, several intersections will be rebuilt - the intersection of General Radzins embankment, 11 november embankment and 13 Janvāra street, intersection of General Radzins embankment and Turgeneva street, intersection of General Radzins embankment and Puškina street. In addition to the above-mentioned intersections, the intersection of Timoteja and Turgeneva Streets and the intersection of Gogolia Street and Gaiziņa Street are also planned to be rebuilt.
Within the framework of the project, the complete reconstruction of the waterfront of General Radziņas will be carried out, which includes all underground and other engineering communications - the external water supply and sewerage networks, gas supply systems, power supply and distribution networks, etc. will be renewed. The heat supply networks will also be changed on Gogolė Street. After that, a full street structure will be built on the waterfront of General Radziņš along its entire length. In the entire section, the surface of the bicycle path will be restored, as well as a pedestrian bicycle ramp will be built, which will connect Maskavas Street with the planned "Rail Baltica" railway bridge over the Daugava.
In the entire area intended for infrastructure reconstruction, the project foresees safer movement solutions for pedestrians and cyclists, environmental improvement and greening. The pedestrian tunnel on Gogolė street near the Central Market will be rebuilt into a bicycle shed. In Maskavas and Gogoļas streets, the project also envisages the reconstruction of the contact networks of trams and trolleybuses. As part of the project, two bridges over the city canal will be rebuilt - on Maskavas Street and on the waterfront of General Radziņš. At the city canal, construction works will also take place next to the territory where the shopping center "Titāniks" used to be located. To ensure access to the canal side, stairs, a ramp and a pier will be built.
At the conclusion of the Riga City Council's procurement for the development and construction of construction projects based on the "design and build" principle, the contract was concluded with the winner of the competition - the general partnership "RBBL", which has merged three companies: SIA "Binders", AS "LNK Industries" and SIA "Nordes Būve". Currently, the development and coordination of construction projects is on the finish line. Construction supervision will be carried out by SIA "Firma L4".
The project "Integration of the railway infrastructure of European importance "Rail Baltica" into the infrastructure of the city center of Riga" is implemented with the 2014-2020 6.1.7 of the specific support objective "Enabling the multimodal transport system" of the operational program "Growth and employment" of the European Union funds planning period of 2016. of the event "Reconstruction of the support infrastructure related to the "Rail Baltica" project". The total project budget is 28 million euros. The largest part is financed by the Cohesion Fund - 23.8 million euros, the municipal and state budget grant is 4.2 million euros.
