Alberta street 1 (Alberta iela 1), Riga
Alberta street 1, Riga. The building designed by Heinrich Scheel (built in 1901) was one of the first Art Nouveau buildings in Riga, and as such it was mercilessly attacked by a hail of criticism - for example, the architect Aleksandrs Vanags (who later worked more in the direction of Art Nouveau national romanticism) wrote about it as follows: "It's a pity for this beautiful area, it's a pity for the wasted labor and material. It is clearly visible that the father of this "work of art" wanted to be "modern" and create something original. The time spent could have been better spent…”. Alberta 1 seems to stand a bit in the shadow of Mikhail Eisenstein's famous Albert Street masterpiece, as well as literally - in the shadow of the trees growing next to it, but the building is both luxuriously decorated and architecturally fascinating, especially from the Antonija Street side.
